WHO'RE YOU GOING TO CALL? No, not ghostbusters but North East Drive Mobility (NEDM)
WHO ARE NEDM?
They are based within Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne & Wear NHS Foundation Trust and are joint funded by Clinical Commissioning Groups and the Department for Transport.
They’re inspected by CQC and accredited by Driving Mobility on a three-yearly basis.
Our main base is Walkergate Park Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne, and we have outreach services in Teesside and Carlisle.
WHAT THEY DO:
Assess medical fitness to drive. They help individuals retain or regain independence through clinical assessment and advice to those with a medical condition, or disability, which may affect their ability to drive, or use a vehicle as a passenger.
They also provide advice and assessment for:
Experienced and learner drivers.
Passengers with mobility difficulties
Powered wheelchair and mobility scooters
Tailor-made transport advice and support to those advised, or choosing, to stop driving.
Tuition in the use of vehicle adaptations.
Healthcare professional advice.
***New Service - Powered Wheelchair and Mobility Scooter Assessments***:
Starting 23rd February 2022, operating from Disability North – Dene Centre (opposite the Freeman Hospital) in Newcastle.
Free of charge and funded by Department for Transport.
Clinically led assessment by qualified physiotherapist or occupational therapists who work under the CNTW NHS Foundation Trust/Driving Mobility umbrella.
Complete with clinical report which may be beneficial for those looking to fund a PWC/MS through Motability, charitable grants or local authority.
Individuals can be referred by health care professionals, charitable organisations, GP or can self-refer.
